WestchesterThis family-oriented neighborhood is picturesquely located on the bluffs just southeast of Marina del Rey. Westchester is a tight-knit bedroom community with easy access to the 405 freeway. The small town atmosphere is fostered by strong community support for the Neighborhood Watch program, and by community involvement in Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) expansion plans and in the Playa Vista development that is planned to take place on the northern border of Westchester. The local Chamber of Commerce has been active in city planning and ongoing renovation of retail and commercial space on Sepulveda Blvd. The neighborhood boasts affordable, middle-class homes and rental housing. Upper middle class homes with views are located on the bluffs in the northern part of the community. Loyola Marymount University provides local employment opportunities, as does Los Angeles International Airport immediately to the south. The Playa Vista development planned to be built north of Loyola-Marymount University and east of Marina del Rey will include a state-of-the-art sound production facility as well as homes and office, retail, and industrial space. During and after its construction, it should add to the local employment base. Local shopping is available at the Westchester Center, and Fox Hills Mall is nearby. Advanced medical care can be had at nearby Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital, Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, and Washington Medical Center. Local attractions include the Westchester Golf Course and the Westchester Recreation Center. To the north, just over the border in Culver City, is Hillside Memorial Park. Miles of clean, uncrowded oceanfront beaches are a few minutes away in the community of Playa del Rey. Marina del Rey offers water sports and breathtaking sunset views from its jetty. In future years, the Ballona Creek Wetlands Preserve planned for the Playa Vista site should provide a variety of hiking and bird watching opportunities for nature enthusiasts. A few minutes to the east of Westchester is Hollywood Park, featuring thoroughbred racing from April to July and from November to December, and harness racing from August to October. The Park is beautifully laid out, with a lagoon, palm trees, and a children’s play area, and is a major attraction for racing fans from all over the Los Angeles area.
