Culver CityLike Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, Culver City is an incorporated city, with its own government, police and fire departments, and school system. It also has its own Parks and Recreation Department, Public Works Department, and bus system. Culver City offers desirable, affordable housing for upwardly mobile middle class families. The environment is ethnically diverse, with more single family homes in the eastern portion, and more rental housing in the western part. Ballona Creek flows through the community, offering more spacious views to nearby homes. Culver City has been a hub for the motion picture industry since the early part of the 20th century. In 1994, for instance, Culver City’s entertainment expenditures ($228 million) were higher than the entertainment expenditures in the entire San Francisco Bay area ($211 million). Today, motion picture industry’s per capita expenditure is $5700 per person in Culver City, a number exceeded by only three other cities nationwide. Entertainment concerns such as Sony Studios provide a stable motion picture and television industry employment base for the community. With a land area of approximately five square miles, Culver City has over 3 million square feet of retail space. Retailers include the 140-store Fox Hills Mall, retail giants such as Target, Circuit City, Office Depot, Toys R Us, and Staples, and over five auto dealerships. Consequently, Culver City’s average household retail sales of $45,000 are 2.5 times greater than the Los Angeles County average of $17,734, indicating that many nonresidents are traveling to Culver City to shop. The Brotman Medical Center and the Washington Medical Center are located in Culver City. The West Los Angeles College campus lies just to the east, in Baldwin Hills. Santa Monica College and Loyola Marymount University are nearby. North of Culver City are the affordable Westside communities of Palms and Mar Vista. To the southwest, about 5 miles from the heart of Culver City, is the upscale community of Marina del Rey. The marina offers many recreational opportunities, along with dining and shopping at the trendy Fisherman’s Village. Also nearby is the site of the masterplanned Playa Vista community. The state-of-the-art sound production facility soon to be built there should provide a strong employment base for Culver City in future years. A popular airport for private planes is located in nearby Santa Monica, and the Los Angeles International Airport is accessible within minutes by freeway 405. Culver City also offers convenient access to downtown Los Angeles commuters, which is 6 miles away via freeway 10.
