Bel AirBel Air is a bedroom community of upper class homes, often with spectacular views of the city or the ocean, or located in secluded, wooded folds between the hills. Like the nearby communities of Beverly Hills, Brentwood, and Pacific Palisades, Bel Air features large estates and multi-million dollar homes. The median household income in this highly desirable community was $138,000 in 1997. To the north, east, and west of Bel Air are the Santa Monica Mountains. The academic community of Westwood is located to the south. Nearby attractions include the UCLA campus and Medical Center, the UCLA/Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center, Mount Saint Mary’s College, and the Veterans Administration to the south, all of which offer a local employment base. To the west of Bel Air is the J. Paul Getty Museum of Art at the Getty Center, and to the east the chic shopping districts of Beverly Hills. Bel Air Country Club is located in Bel Air itself. Los Angeles Country Club is to the southeast, in Westwood. The extensive MountainGate Country Club, with a 27-hole golf course and 17 lighted tennis courts, lies to the west in the mountains of northern Brentwood. Two major shopping malls – Sherman Oaks Fashion Square to the north and Century City Shopping Center to the south, are in nearby communities.
